Hi Lizzie, thank you so much for being our featured artist for March 2020!
Would you tell us a little bit about where you're from and what you do?
I grew up in East Sussex UK, where I continue to work today. I studied BA Textiles at Goldsmiths Collage in London and then MA Design at Brighton University. I went on to run the block print textile company, Woven Oak, with my husband Leo where our customers included Liberty London and The Victoria & Albert Museum. The Bauhaus, Abstract Expressionists and Matisse’s cutouts influence my bold abstract style. I currently create art prints and bold fabric designs.
Did you study art/design and how do you think it led to your current way of working?
My background in textiles has definitely influenced my current work. When I was studying at Goldsmiths I specialised in print and spent most of my time creating colour samples. There is a strong parallel with the collage papers I create and use in my work today.
What is your main process, and is that your favorite?
My two main processes are screen print & collage. I love the freedom and spontaneity these bring. I am lucky enough to have my own garden studio so I have total freedom.
Your bold designs are really uplifting and bursting with life. Where does inspiration come from?
I have always loved bright bold colours. I think many trips to Cornwall as a child certainly had an impression on me. I love the work of abstract painters like Terry Frost, Sandra Blow and Patrick Heron. I am obsessed with walking by the sea and the ever changing nature of light.
Your cushions are beautiful really bringing joy to the shop! Will you be making more homewares someday?
I'm currently focusing on paper prints but sometimes get asked to design fabric. There's something so satisfying about putting your work into repeat and seeing it on a product.
Is there a dream project or collaboration you'd like to do?
I would love to have an exhibition with my husband Leo someday. I'm also currently pretty keen to win the Slowdown Studio rug competition!
Have you got any events planned for this year? Where can we find you?
I'm currently working on a series of new screen prints for the Brighton Festival in May. I will be exhibiting at The Secret Garden at 142 as part of the Fiveways trail.
What's your favourite time of year and why?
When the sun's shining and the skies are blue.
What's your favourite thing for dinner?
I love making homemade Indian Marsala Dosa.
Thank you so much Lizzie!
